PERSONALITY: If there was one word to describe Howl Jenkins it would definitely be eccentric, a charming wizard who uses dashing good looks to his advantage whilst gallivanting across the lands of Ingary. Much unlike that of the other witches and wizards of the populace whom serve the two nations of Ingary like puppets he prefers to work alone in solitude, serving only himself rather than as a pawn for their paltry war. Despite not choosing a side, Howl still fights his own battles to save the lands of Ingary from the destructive powers both technological and magic that ravage its magnificent beauty he so desperately wishes to protect. Some would call him selfish to this end as he was never one to follow orders, from a young age abandoning the teachings of his master Madam Sullivan to follow in his own path becoming one of the most powerful wizards the world had ever seen.
Spending many of his early days worrying about his looks and wooing young ladies, Howl was known to be quite vain in his youth leading early into the film when first meeting Sophie. Despite saving her from boorish soldiers he dragged her into a mess of trouble, ultimately leading her to be cursed by the Witch of the Wastes. When the pair were reunited with Sophie being turned into an old lady, seeking him out at his castle he almost did not seem to care much for her plight, though was empathetic enough to let her stay with his ragtag family Markl and Calcifer both after striking a deal with the fire demon.
As the movie progresses his bond with Sophie grows and thus his attitude shifts from that of a self absorbed teenager to a proper gentlemen of his age despite constantly craving attention and outlandish outbursts brought about by the old ladies manic cleaning of his castle. Sophie can see him for what he truly is, a kind hearted soul who wished for peace and prosperity for all although going about it the wrong way sometimes leading to his own demise, constant shape shifting during his ventures through the portal doors leaving him ragged. Putting himself at risk had no bearings on him despite Calcifer's constant insistence to stop pushing too hard for one day he may not be able to turn back, becoming a savage beast like the witches and wizards serving the courts mindlessly under the subjugation of Ingary's rulers.
Howl is known to be a great and powerful wizard but he often runs from his problems instead of facing them head on. Fear surrounded his person at times, cowardly despite his powers and would not face things head on much unlike his older companion who was steadfast to stand up to Madam Sullivan upon his summoning. Ultimately this act of generosity and valor gave Howl the courage to stick up for what he believes in and protect those closest to him, Sophie and his newfound family of misfits bound together in their many adventures to come.
Without Sophie he may never of overcome his cowardly ways and continued to live his life carefree, void of meaningful love and friendship to those who aided his cause. With her guidance Howl was able to find purpose in his constant existential struggles as he waged a war against not only his own well being but the two nations at war until finally coming to a swift and merciful end. With renewed vigor for life, Howl lives out his days with his beloved counterpart who not only gave him back his heart but changed it for the better.
POWERS/ABILITIES:
Shapeshifting: During the course of the film Howl has shown capabilities of transforming into various forms, most commonly the winged creature similar to that of a bird. He is also seen to be able to take the form of other people when he disguises himself as the King of Ingary while Sophie visits Madam Sullivan in his stead. This has led me to believe he is capable of all sorts of transformations like in the book.
Sorcery: Being a prodigal wizard of Ingary with powers rivalling some of the world's most powerful witches and wizards, Howl uses his abilities to further his own goals and ideals. Ranging from shapeshifting to charm removal the eccentric wizards abilities are seemingly limitless despite the toll it begins to take on his person towards the end of the film, slowly losing himself to his own powers from excessive use.
Apothecary Skills: Not much is shown in the way of Howl's potion making skills but is apparent through the film as he uses created tonics for beauty, dying his hair from blonde to orange by mistake after Sophie sees fit to tidy the bathroom where he hides away from time to time after long nights on the battlefield between the raging war of the two nations in Ingary.
INVENTORY: Nothing other than the clothes on his back and a lone strand of pink ribbon from one of Sophie's many hats as a memento.
MOONBLESSING: Sanguis - (Mountain Bluebird) Will have featherlike appendages in his first major transformation like the film with color traits similar to the Mountain Bluebird.
